About me:
I am currently an associated researcher at the University of Zürich. My training reflects my interest in the intersections of decolonisation, economic development and the post-War global economic system.
My research on post-colonial state-formation points to the spatial reconfiguration of oceanic commercial and trade in South Asia, and was shared in a 2023 workshop on the limits of decolonization co-organised by Erez Manela (Harvard) and Elisabeth Leake (Tufts).
In 2023, I also co-organised two-day workshop on imperial and post-war financial infrastructure under the auspices of the Institute for New Economic Thinking. Decolonising Monetary Policy brought together young scholars, many from the Global South, with established scholars.
I earned my my PhD, Magna Cum Laude, in International History and Politics, Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva in October 2023
My dissertation entitled: “Empire Redrawn: Territorial States, National Economies and the Partition of British India, 1940-1950”, was under the supervision of Carolyn Biltoft.
Interdisciplinarity
At the intersection of economic history and memory studies, my research reflects my commitment to robust and fertile multidisciplinary analysis of post-War decolonisation. Material history and business history provide a neglected lens onto the significant reinscription of economic relations.
I was awarded an M.A. Economics, Summa Cum Laude, from The New School for Social Research, Graduate Faculty in May 2003. My dissertation on money supply in developing countries was supervised by Lance Taylor, Emeritus Professor, Economic Development.
B.A., Government (Political Science) and Economics, Cornell University, May 1995. My thesis titled “The Emergence of National Identity in India”, supervised by Benedict Anderson, examined the roots of post-colonial Indian nationalism.
Financial Journalism
My previous career was as a financial journalist for Reuters in New York (Sept. 1997-Dec. 2002), where I was Deputy Editor-in-Charge for the energy desk and headed the Foreign Exchange desk, which allowed me to cover a number of U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve officials. In Mumbai (Dec. 2003-July 2005), I worked as a senior sub-editor and then as a Treasury correspondent, before I turned to freelance journalism and research.
